Testing… testing… is this thing on?

So… um… yeah. Hi. As it says at the top of the page, I’m Ryan A. Hörst and this is my blog. For future reference, those two funny dots over the “o” in my last name are an umlaut which makes the “o” sound like “ue”, as in “Huerst”, which is how my name is properly pronounced. I’ve heard it pronounced improperly my whole life, and now I’m fighting back. That’s what happens when you push a German too far… or so I hear.

Anyways, I’ve never blogged before, but I frequent (and post on) about a dozen forums and message boards, some of which are listed under my blogroll. Check ‘em out, they’re pretty cool… if you like the same stuff I do, that is. I don’t have anything specific to blog about, per se, so I’ll probably just do this for kicks for a while and see how things go. Maybe I’ll throw a rant or other miscellaneous opinion on here periodically, as well. I’ve got a MySpace account and could probably blog there, but here’s something you probably haven’t heard much… I HATE MYSPACE! I’ve only got it because I’ve got a few friends who don’t have a Facebook account. I’m much more active over there.

A little about me (the rest will go in the “About… me” page): as the banner would lead you to believe, I’m a specialist in the Army. I’m currently stationed at Camp Hovey in South Korea, and have been here for almost a whole year straight. I work for the second most powerful men on this whole post, our battalion commander and the command sergeant major, as the Command Group Administrative Assistant (which is actually much cooler than it sounds). The CSM is my immediate supervisor, and I get to yell and curse at first sergeants while quoting the CSM. This job also has the added benefit of pretty much making me a ghost on post. I don’t go to ANY formations, and since I was transfered from a different company, but still live in those barracks, I don’t sign in or out of anywhere. Pretty much no one other than the command group and the people in our S-1, 2, and 3 shops know who I am.

I’ve managed to leave behind some friends and family back in West Virginia (not WESTERN Virginia) where I call home, which has been tough. Most of them miss me (not my wife, but that’s a LOOOOOOOONG story), so they try to stay in contact via email, AIM, or my Vonage phone. By the way, if you’re in the military and are deployed anywhere OCONUS (if you don’t know what that means, don’t worry about it), you NEED a Vonage device. It’s the shit. I’ve got some cool-ass friends, and I’ll probably say something about them here in just a bit.

So there you have it. A quick glimpse at me and my life as it stands now. I’m gonna go write something in my “About… me” section now, but stay tuned and see what’s next.

Catch you on the flip side.

  1. Hey!
We have something in common, I hate MySpace too! Which is why I obliterated it. Ha!

  2. Well, since I am the first breathing human to leave a comment, that OBVIOUSLY awards me the ‘Best Bruver’ medal, which I accept proudly.

Nice blog so far… I’ll be watching.

    Worlds away, ~Bryon
