Monster Hunter Alpha eARC review

Ok, so I just finished the eARC of Monster Hunter Alpha last Thursday… or Friday, I forget which.  Either way, it was only a couple days from start to finish.  Let me tell you, it was AWESOME!  I’ve read all of Larry’s other books, the ones in his Monster Hunter series and the first book in his new series, The Grimnoir Chronicles, and this one is right up there as my favorite.  You can tell that Larry is getting even better (he was already good, according to the New York Times… 🙂  ) at his writing with this book.  Now, for those expecting some Monster Hunter International team-up ass-kicking goodness, you won’t find it here, really.  This book is all about Earl Harbinger and his backstory.  He does end up putting together a makeshift group of hunters to help him save the small town they’re stuck in, but it’s not his seasoned crew and there is only passing mentions of the other characters from his other books.

Larry gives a much-needed fill-in on Earl and where he came from and what he can do.  It fleshes him out personality-wise really well and makes you understand why he is the way he is.  You even get to see a side of Earl that no one has seen before.  It’s really… cute… for lack of a better explanation (and without any spoilers).  Something else Larry does with this book is define how, in his universe, werewolves were created.  I enjoyed reading this imagining of the lycanthrope history very much.

Also, I am definitely in this book.  Well, at least in name.  🙂  My character is a stone cold operator who talks a big game but doesn’t have the backbone to lead from the front successfully.  According to the deal Larry made with us, I die in the book.  It’s a really cool way to go, though.  Let’s just say that karma is a bitch.  LOL

While I think buying the eARC was totally worth it, I’m a die-hard fan of Larry’s and just can’t wait until it comes out in paperback.  For everyone else, I HIGHLY recommend pre-ordering this book if you,

  1. liked his other two Monster Hunter books, or
  2. just enjoy a really good werewolf novel.

There are spoilers in this book, though, if you have NOT read the other two Monster Hunter books.  Just be warned.  I give it two thumbs way up!
